Steampunk’d cosplay

Steampunk pretty much does what it says on the tin (or brass). The steam half of the name taking influence from steam powered engineering, particularly from 19th century British and American culture (think Danny Boyle’s 2012 opening ceremony – factories and engineering). Punk hinting towards the grunge and rebellious nature, loving a gritty, clunky and unapologetic engineering process over the sleek and often hidden or invisible process of digitisation.

Steampunk translates well to fashion and cosplay in particular, for those who want to adapt a character into a look they have created they add a steampunk edge, making them more badass as unique. These are the best of the best…

THE BEST OF: Okō – Hoozuki no Reitetsu

Hoozuki no Reitetsu’s Okō, my new favourite female character. I love her class and power on top of her awesome look and the fact she’s a demon. Traditional geisha meets modern lolita, class and innocence meets the devil, she’s the ultimate ying/yang character. Although being fairly new she’s picking up a following already…

THE BEST OF: Kakashi Hatake

I have to admit this post is purely selfish… Kakashi is my one and only anime crush, so finding the best cosplays of him gives me nothing but joy. These fans give the perfect Kakashi- the understated hero with an element of Peter Pan’s boyish nature.

THE BEST OF: Rider, Fate/ Stay Night

Usually I only blog about characters and anime I have seen, Fate/Stay Night however – I am yet to watch. I’ve been recommended it by friends but have never given it a chance; however after seeing these great cosplays of a character called Rider I might start. Character design is a big part of why I and a lot of others watch anime, I tend to like the more obscure edgy looks, rather than the frilly dresses or school uniforms. Rider ticks all the boxes, I only hope the FSN lives up to the style of Rider.

Princess Shirahoshi, One Piece cosplay by Ajo

I have avoided One Piece for years – simply for the fact it took me 6 years to catch up on Naruto (& Shippuden) – I have no desire to spend the next six watching all 639 episodes of One Piece. However this photography series I could not avoid! Finding a unique style within the world of cosplay photography can be hard – the unknown photographer who shot this series however is a hidden gem. Their styling and use of colour in this series is only enhanced by the beauty and talent of cosplayer Ajo. I only wish I knew who shot them.

THE BEST OF: Mawaru Penguindrum

Usually I focus on one character for my posts, but whilst researching Himari cosplays I realised that with this story the main characters are too vital to each other to not feature them all – these are the best of the best.

Star Trek by Bryan Pedrazzoli

I LOVE location cosplay, I briefly looked at how much impact the right landscape can have on an image and take cosplay photography to the next level in my post on ‘The Wild Places‘; Bryan Pedrazzoli has done the same with his Star Trek series, taking his subjects into an open rocky desert in America to mimic the ‘unknown planet’ style of the TV series, which often used landscapes like this.

One day I will capitalise on the rich landscapes in England and produce location shoots in order to push myself and the world of cosplay photography out of it’s convention centre boundaries, but for now work like Bryan Pedrazzoli’s will continue to inspire me.

THE BEST OF: Madoka Kaname

Want a character that combines cute and badassMadoka Kaname is your girl, from the series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Her pink colours and cute outfits mean she is cosplayed  A LOT! So here are the best of the best – people who have payed close attention to detail and transformed into this magical girl

“Can I ask one more thing? Don’t let… me turn into a witch. There’s awful, horrible things in this world, I know that now. But there’s a lot of things worth protecting too.” – Madoka Kaname

Daria Cosplay

So often cosplay photography is overdone, saturated with colour, photoshop and an excessive amount of flesh. That’s why I think this series is a breath of fresh air. The simplistic approach may have been influenced by the show itself, unlike most cosplay characters Daria and her friends have a subdue almost deadpan energy.

Props to photographer Annet Voronaya who knows when to tone it down and how to compliment the characters and their show through cosplay photography. A skill that is often forgotten about in and replaced with cleavage and crotch shots.

Cosplay Showcase by Nobutsugu Sugiyama

Cosplay photos often have a sexual bias. Photographer Nobutsugu Sugiyama has endeavoured to remove this bias and elevated Cosplay to a form of artistic and creative expression by the use of high-end photo-editing techniques. Conventional methods of shooting a model usually demand expressing their individual natures. However,Sugiyama has removed this individual interiority and focused on just the outline of the character. Resembling an anime-figurine,cosplayers are perfectly placed in a virtual showcase in this application.
